adamari lopez Hal Krantz, an experienced teacher at Coral Springs Middle School is upset about the state of affairs in education today.

He wonders how he will be paid in light of recent merit pay legislation.

“No one can explain what this new legislation means,” said Krantz. “Will it be based on student achievement. If my students do well, will I get a one time bonus or a permanent raise. Will it count toward my retirement. How will it work for special education teachers or elective teachers.”

Krantz said there really is no such thing as tenure in the State of Florida. A principal can fire a teacher if that principal follows procedures showing that the teacher performed poorly. They only real defense that teachers have is a due process system.

“The legislature is saying they don’t even want to go through the due process approach. A principal can just say you’re fired,” said Krantz.

Krantz said he expects the Florida Education Association to file a lawsuit because the legislation violates union collective bargaining arrangements.
